Feria de Primavera Art Call

I have found an image that I can’t stop thinking about and I had to find a way to share it will all of my mail art friends!

A few weeks ago while browsing through the “what’s happening area” at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, I came across a post card advertisement. Its for a fundraising event that was held on June 24th to raise money for the Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre in Minneapolis. The event sounded wonderful, but it was not my sense of charity that made me pick up the post card. It was the image on the front of the card.

The woman on the front is incredible. She’s haunting, strong, sad, joyous, sassy, and sexy all at once! There’s just something about her that actually made me, a huge introvert, think about going to the darn event just to see what kind of theater would pick such an awesome image for its advertising. Well, I picked up four cards (one to play with and a few more to send to friends) to see if I could round up someone to go to the party. I ended up giving away all four and still not finding anyone who would go with me and I found myself pissed off. Not going to the event and not having a card.

I thought about that dancer for 2 weeks and kicked myself for giving away all four of the cards. I considered calling the theater and asking if there were more cards….but I finally just had to let her go. But AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh…. then fate stepped in and rescued me!

I was back at the Center today, the morning after the event…and there was a small stack of cards still sitting on the bookshelf. I thought, maybe I shouldn’t take them all… but rationalized my thievery but telling myself the event is over…what would they do with the cards now…why can’t I take them all?!?!?!!

There are 57 cards in that little stack….and I would like to see what you, all my rowdy mail art friends, can make of her!

I was going to post a picture of the card, but have decided against it. I want each of you to see her as I did…unexpectedly! If you would like to participate in this interesting call for submission, please email me your address and I will mail you a card as soon as possible. All artwork should be 4x6 inches and the deadline for participation is August 16, 2006.

I will photograph all of the submissions and post them on my blog and send the originals to the Zorongo Flamenco with a request to exhibit them at an opening night sometime this fall. If I get at least 25 cards back, I will create a mini-zine just around this image as a supplement to the September Postal Press…I warned you that I am addicted to this image!

*** Although these are postage paid cards…I don’t want the theater to pay the postage on them so I am covering their Non-Profit ID#. If you want to participate in this call…a non-canceled post card stamp would be greatly appreciated…just because postage is KILLING me…but mail art is MY addiction so don’t let 24 cents stand in the way! Also, since I hope they will want to exhibit these post cards…I think it would be best if all artwork is sent back to me in an envelope, though that is not a requirement…it is merely a suggestion. ****

Lastly, if anyone is a multimillionaire and would like to support a fabulous theater, please send a nice big check to this place. I have never seen their facility or any of their shows…but the artwork on this card inspired me…and isn’t that the point? If you do send them a check…tell them, Serendipity sent ya!

OK, so you have me interested ... send me a postcard and I will see what I can do with it. (I'll send you some extra postage when I return the card, ok?).
BTW, I haven't forgotten about an article for your next zine ... just too busy to do anything about it right now ... soon, I hope.
I so loved the first issue of the zine, and all the goodies in it. Loved the 'cover stock' you bound it in.
Thanks.
