Journal Swap Going Very Well

I have started a new series of books for the art journal swap. The first set (six in total) are mid-sized journals with handmade paper pages. I like the look however the functionality is a challenge to say the least. You can see here that the paper has flecks of newsprint in it…which means it’s not smooth…which can be challenging.

I picked moleskine for the next series of books. Like the first set, the covers are reinforced…but I didn’t feel the need to do any work to keep the pages intact because these are machine-made books; the pages are sewn in…which makes for a pretty sturdy structure. The downside of the moleskine is the pages are very thin…and again, will require that the people who work in the books have a good grasp of technique, otherwise the pages will not last. It’s a gamble, but I like the size of these journals better…more space and believe it or not, more pages…though it doesn’t look like it. I have done some preventative maintenance to the covers…god I love packing tape.

I’m going to play with a few other book structures over the course of this call. Just to see how they fair over time…how artists use them…are inspired by them.

Oh…and a reminder…everyone keeps a book 15 days. Add a few days of shipping and you’re talking almost 20 days. I have no goal for number of books…so I just prepare another book and send it out. If I have a book that’s been worked on, I send it out as soon as possible so its best to have your name and address here, on the list, so that I can send a book right out.

Today I’m sending # 1,7, 8 and 9…4 is being worked on locally and should come back in the next 5 days. I hope to have 10, 11 and 12 ready for shipping by end of the week; they are heading for New Jersey, California and Belgium. Books #13 – 20 will be ready by the end of the weekend. So if you want one, please send your address via email and I will add you to the list. Once your payment arrives, I’ll get a book out to you.
