Several months ago I posted that I had lots of journals available to work in for my collaborative journal project. The requests for books was overwhelming to say the least. I ended up with a huge list of people wanting to work in a journal. I kept a running list and just kept sending them out as quickly as I could.
One journal, #3, is completely full…and several others are very close! But as of today, I have no more people on the waiting list. Everyone that sent me a valid address has gotten a book. I know several books are waiting for me at the Post Office in Eden Prairie…and will arrive next week. Soooooo…here we go again!
If you want to work in a book, even if you’ve already worked in a journal…send me an email. I will put you on the list for a book. I also have 5 new, never worked in journals ready to be sent out…so you may be first, you maybe last…you maybe in the middle…but if you send a note soon, you will have a book within 10 days! Hell, if you send me a note tonight, you could have a journal in your hot little hands by Wednesday because I have three of them sitting here right now!
Oh, please note…if you have something to send to me…use my California address:

I am working on uploading the last few pictures as well. Whew! It’s so nice to get back in the swing of things! I have posted pictures of Journals #3, 5 and 7...and will have pictures of #4 in the morning. Wow...and then I'll need someone to send that one out to. Soooo, send me your address quick!

I like to do truly handmade zines, but because The Swap Shop list is now over 80 people, I just don’t have the time to make them all by hand. The covers and mailing vessels are unique though…and of course, it’s all written by me. The first round of zines are going out to all the folks on the Swap Shop List. These covers are abstract acrylics…and very simple. I had fun making these little covers…and sometimes, simple really is best.
The overall content is good…it brings everyone up to speed on me and what’s going on here, highlights a couple of cools swaps and covers a few things about the Swap Shop. But, I think my next mini-zine will be larger and I would like to add some artwork. The problem with artwork is my stuff is so color driven that I would have to print/copy the zine in color, which is very expensive. I’m unsure what to do about that…but it will come to me!
I’ll be printing another mini-zine next month…bigger than the one I’ve just completed…probably 4X6. A little larger format will allow for some artwork and gives me more room to rant…and fewer pages to print. I’m shooting for 5 pages on the next issue, front and back, but we’ll see how that goes. It really all depends on how much I write over the next week or two.
Zines have been around forever…same with mail art…and I think both are an interesting way to exchange art and information. But, my experience with mail art is that people focus primarily on the artwork, not the artist. I am hoping that the zine format will deepen the interpersonal connection, though I admit…that may be a pipe dream.
If you want to swap mini zines, send me one of yours at:

FYI...the Swap Shop List is still growing...but I haven't sent out an updated list in several months. Just so you know, I'm sending the newest list out with my mini-zine...and there are about 80 people on that list...and 125 people in my personal mail art network. Gotta love it!
All the journals are out floating around...and several are completely full, so I think it's time to start some new ones. I'll be getting more journals ready for shipment over the next week and I'll mail them the last week of February. I have a lot of people on the mailing list, but will need more. If you'd like to be the first one to work in a book, please send me an email with your address.
I am Minneapolis right now and spent the day at my favorite place in the world, The Loft Literary Center. I put of several posters looking for book artists and journalists and writers. I hope I get at least a few people interested in working in the journals. My dream would be to do a show at The Loft. An open house at Open Book...where people could check out a journal, go sit down with it...and enjoy it. I hope that people wouldn't run off with them, but it's a chance I'm willing to take. My goal is to have at least 50 journals, and the plan is to send them out for a full year.
Anyway, I put up 4 posters around the building...and hopefully they will generate some interest. I'll keep you all posted.

I’ve noticed more and more interest in zines….mini zines to be exact and when I say mini, I mean smaller than 4x6 inches. More people seem to be enjoying working on their own little magazines…and I miss working on my full-size deal, so I was thinking, I would like to put together an "in-between" issue of the Postal Press – my paper art zine. This one will be small and mailed in an interesting packaging of some sort. I’m currently working on content and have already done most of the work on the packaging, printing will take place at my local Kinko’s since I have no printer here in my funny little bungalow, and the folks I will mail to will be everyone currently on the Swap Shop list…and anyone who sends me their zine. (Yes, I know…that’s a long sentence, but you get the idea.)
The zine that you send should also be current…something you’ve made recently…and tell me something about you…your art…your likes, dislikes, fears, secrets, hopes, dreams…whatever…but share something about you…not just random weirdness…I like that kind of mail art, but for this swap, I want to learn something about you…and I will do the same. The overall theme of the zine can be whatever you want…maybe your favorite color or your favorite time of day or least favorite food…or just a mini-journal of what is going on in your life…or what kind of art you’re into…or whatever…just be you.
My other request is that you be prepared to send a copy of your zine to ten people (you can pick who you send to) off the Swap Shop list that I send to you with my zine. Yes, in a perfect world I would love for you to send everyone on the list a mini zine, but I honestly do not believe that will happen (there are over 80 people on the list as of right now)…so I ask that you pick 10 people…including at least 3 artists outside of the US, and send them one of your zines. Be sure to tell them why you are sending them something… random mail is nice, but this isn’t really random, so speak up!
I will post pictures of all the zines that I receive, though I doubt that I will post pictures of the zine that I’m creating…at least not for awhile. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for the people I’m sending them to. Lastly, please send your zines to my California address after February 4th. My mini zine will printed and ready for shipping by then. I certainly don’t want to leave anyone hanging.
Soooooo…I’m looking forward to seeing what comes of this!
